What it is
Narrative Therapy is an approach that explores the stories people carry about themselves, relationships and problems. A label alone does not tell you exactly how an individual practitioner works.
General principles
Practitioners may describe this work through separating a person from a problem and making room for overlooked knowledge and values. Their training, scope and style can differ.
What a session may involve
A session may include conversation about language, identity, relationships and moments that do not fit a problem-saturated story. You can ask for a clear explanation before trying any exercise or process.
Who may provide it
Different regulated and non-regulated professionals may describe training in an approach. Ask about relevant education, ongoing training, scope and registration, then verify regulated titles with the appropriate Ontario college.
A useful question
How do you make sure my own meaning and culture lead the conversation?
